The Small Hours

An email pen pal, minus the email.

Everything easy about writing to someone online. None of it mixed in with the rest of your email.

How it works

You write in a private inbox on this site, from your phone or your laptop. I write back there by the next day. If you want, an email tells you a reply is waiting. It never says what the letter says, and you can choose the sender name it shows.

No app to download, no stamps, no address swapped with a stranger. Your letters stay in one place, in order, for as long as you’re writing.

Why not just email a pen pal?

You can, and the free directories are full of people offering. Most of those letters end up mixed in with the rest of your email, and most of those strangers go quiet around letter three.

Here the letters have a place of their own. And I keep writing back because I want to know what you say next.

Private by default

  • Sign in with a link, no password to remember or have guessed.
  • An optional PIN, asked every time the letters open.
  • A browser tab title you choose.
  • A quick exit button, and the Escape key, that leave straight away.
  • Reply emails that carry no content, sent wherever you like.

Who’s writing

I’m Cal. I live on the coast of North Carolina. One person, not a team, writing back because I’d like to know what you think. Not therapy, not dating, not a bot, not a newsletter. More on how it works.

$25 a month, cancel any time. I’m starting with a small number of people, because it falls apart if I don’t keep up. Leave your email and I’ll tell you when there’s room.
